Sailing on the Nile river
In the palpitating heart of Egypt lies the Nile River, the main communication route of ancient Egyptian civilization. Sailing on the Nile River feels like stepping back in time, blending ancient history with breathtaking natural beauty.
The Nile played a crucial role in the fertility of the land, supporting crops and lush valleys. Because of this, cities and towns are typically found on the eastern bank of the river, while cemeteries and burial temples are situated on the western side.
The ideal time to visit is from October to April when temperatures are more comfortable, ranging between 25-30°C, making visits to temples and the overall ride is much more enjoyable. There are many ways of sailing on the Nile River. Whichever way you choose depends on your preferences. All of them offer beautiful sights, although some will be more romantic than others.
Felucca Rides
For me, the Felucca ride is a must do. Feluccas are traditional, wooden sailboats that have been used in Egypt, Sudan, and Iraq for thousands of years. Sailing on them usually gives you the opportunity to enjoy a more intimate trip and access places where a voyage boat couldn’t reach. They offer a relaxed way to explore the Nile.
Feluccas are also suitable for shorter trips, and you can even rent them by the hour. You can either book them in advance or just approach the riverbank, where there are many sailors offering this service. The usual longer routes are between Luxor and Aswan.
They come in different shapes and sizes, and they are available for both single travelers (Like the one I took) or small groups. If you decide to take a longer trip, please keep in mind that Feluccas do not have cabins or enclosed areas, so you would sleep in the open air.
Cruise or Riverboats
For many people, the stylish way to explore the Nile River is aboard a cruise, as it combines comfort with adventure . There are many options available, from 5 star cruises to riverboats with less amenities. These are comparable to the cruises we have in the west. You can cruise from Luxor to Aswan or, depending on the cruise, more extensive routes all the way from Cairo to Luxor/Aswan. They run on schedule, so it is recommended to book these in advance. Just like a regular cruise, they make stops for you to discover the attractions on the way. They usually feature private cabins, restaurant, sundecks, pools and bar. You’ll typically spend several nights aboard, enjoying leisurely days of exploration and relaxation.
Both options offer their own special charm. A felucca ride is a chance to connect deeply with the river’s timeless beauty, while a cruise combines comfort with a broader exploration of Egypt’s incredible heritage. Whichever you choose, sailing on the Nile is sure to be a highlight of your trip.hey come in different shapes and sizes, and they are available for both single travelers (Like the one I took) or small groups. If you decide to take a longer trip, please keep in mind that Feluccas do not have cabins or enclosed areas, so you would sleep in the open air.
