Ajloun Castle
A Day Trip into Jordan’s Crusader Past
Ajloun Castle (also known as Qal’at ar-Rabad) sits about 70 km (43 miles) north of Amman in the Ajloun Governorate. It takes around 1.5 to 2 hours to reach by car, depending on traffic. Many travelers pair it with a visit to the Jerash Roman ruins, making for a fantastic day trip full of culture, nature, and history.
Where Is Ajloun Castle?
If you’re looking to escape the bustle of Amman for a day and step into Jordan’s medieval past, Ajloun Castle makes for a stunning and satisfying detour. Perched on a forested hilltop in northern Jordan, this centuries-old fortress isn’t just a history lesson—it’s a place where you can touch ancient stones, breathe crisp mountain air, and imagine a time when knights and empires clashed across the land.
A Little History
Ajloun Castle was built in 1184 by the nephew of the legendary Muslim military leader Saladin. Its purpose? To protect the region from Crusader invasions and to control the iron trade routes running through the Jordan Valley.
Over the centuries, the castle expanded and changed hands, from the Ayyubids to the Mamluks to the Ottomans. Despite damage from multiple earthquakes (the region is seismically active), much of the structure remains impressively intact.
What to Expect When You Visit
- Imposing Architecture – Think thick stone walls, arrow slits, watchtowers, and winding staircases. This place was built to last—and to defend.
- Panoramic Views – From the castle’s hilltop perch, you get sweeping views of olive groves, villages, and rolling green hills. On clear days, you can even see the West Bank.
- Small Museum – Inside the castle, you’ll find a modest but informative museum with ancient pottery, weapons, and historical context.
- Peaceful Surroundings – Unlike the crowds of Petra or Jerash, Ajloun tends to be quiet—making it an ideal spot to reflect and roam freely.
