The Pink Sand Beach on Harbour Island

Pink sand beach harbor island bahamas

Harbour Island, one of the smaller island in The Bahamas, is famous for its beautiful Pink Sand Beach. Stretching for over 3 miles (5 km), it is considered as one of the best beaches in the country, with its warm crystal clear waters and soft pink sands, as well as one of the top 10 beaches in the world.

Its pale pink color comes from bits of coral and the Foraminifera, a marine insect known for its bright pink / red color shell. These insects live on the reefs, under the rocks, on the sea floors and in caves. They are washed up on shore by Waves, currents and fish when these knock their shells apart, mixing them with corals bits, broken shells, calcium carbonate and sand, creating an unique pink color.

Walking along the Pink Sand Beach is a sensory delight. As you stroll barefoot along the powdery shoreline, the delicate grains of pink sand gently massage your feet. The soft texture and subtle blush of the sand beneath your toes add to the enchantment of this natural phenomenon.

The beach is framed by crystal-clear turquoise waters that gradually deepen, creating a striking contrast against the rosy backdrop. The calm and inviting sea provides an ideal setting for swimming, snorkeling, or simply relaxing on the surface of the gentle waves. Snorkelers can explore the vibrant coral reefs just offshore, teeming with colorful marine life.

The beach is complemented by the charming island of Harbour Island itself, which exudes a laid-back and welcoming vibe. The small community of Dunmore Town, located nearby, offers a glimpse into the island’s history and culture with its colonial architecture, pastel-colored houses, and local shops and restaurants. The island is a secluded destination offering numerous resorts and accommodations, from luxury to on a budget to fit any type of traveler.
