SAFETY

Sri Lanka is a safe country to travel, with a low crime rate. It was a dangerous country (Due to a civil war and terror attacks), but the government put some policies in place to try to reactivate the tourism industry. Nowadays, petty crime, wildlife and traffic are the major risks. The country is known for its warm and welcoming locals who are always ready to lend a helping hand to visitors in need.

CLIMATE

Extremely close to the Equator line, Sri Lanka has a tropical climate with two distinct monsoon seasons. The southwest monsoon brings rain from May to September, while the northeast monsoon brings rain from December to February. The best time to visit Sri Lanka is from December to March, when the weather is dry and pleasant. However, the island’s varied geography means that there are always sunny spots to be found, even during the rainy season.

VISA POLICY

Sri Lanka has a relatively easy and straightforward visa policy for most tourists. Visitors from a large number of countries are eligible for a visa on arrival, which can be obtained at the airport upon arrival in Sri Lanka. This includes nationals from the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, and many other countries. The visa on arrival is valid for 30 days and can be extended for an additional 60 days. Some countries, however, are required to obtain a visa before traveling to Sri Lanka. These countries include Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, Nigeria, and several others. It is important for travelers to check with the Sri Lankan embassy or consulate in their country of origin to determine the specific visa requirements for their nationality. It is also worth noting that Sri Lanka has recently introduced an electronic travel authorization system (ETA) for all tourists, regardless of whether they require a visa or not. The ETA must be obtained online prior to arrival and is valid for 180 days.

How to get around Sri Lanka

By plane: Sri lanka has a limited network of domestic flights, with only 12 airports in the country. It is a good option if you are limited in time and want to travel to specific destinations fast.

By Car: Car rental is an option in Sri Lanka, although hiring a car and a driver is more common thanks to the craziness of Sri Lanka’s traffic and drivers. The prices of the rental with driver vary tremendously depending on the company, while self-drive car hire prices start at $30/day, which is quite affordable. Distances are relatively short in the island country, and you will need a special permit to drive.

By foot: Some towns in Sri Lanka are small enough you can walk it entirely.
