Situated east of Madagascar, this small island provides travelers with much more than just beautiful beaches and tropical weather. Rainforests, waterfalls, hiking trails, reefs, extensive wildlife and a mix of cultures, Mauritius is one of the best african destinations you know almost nothing about.

Why Visit

NATURE: Mauritius is home to the 7 Coloured Earth, a unique volcanic geological phenomenon. It also houses around a dozen nature reserves and botanical gardens to explore, plus mountainous vistas, waterfalls and tropical forests. And let’s not forget about the spectacular coral reefs and exotic marine life.

THE FOOD & CULTURE: Mauritius involves the blending of several cultures and it’s a perfect example of pluralism harmony. The island has influence from European, Indian, African and Asian as it was colonised by the Dutch, French and British before its independence. You’ll spot monuments from various religions side by side, and offers one of the most interesting cuisines on the planet.

ADVENTURE: With all these outdoor attractions, Mauritius is easily one of the best destinations for adventure travel and adrenaline-boost seekers. Island hopping, scuba diving, snorkeling, quad bike, mountain bike, hiking, kayaking, windsurfing, kitesurfing, paddle boarding and sailing are just some of the activities you can do.

PRICE: Against all the odds, Mauritius can offer an exclusive vacation at affordable rates. Of course, it depends on your interests and choices. As it is located in the middle of the ocean, you can expect the flight ticket to be a bit expensive, but if you flight in low season, they won’t be so bad.

Bucketlist

What to expect

LANGUAGE: The Mauritian Constitution makes no mention of an official language, but Mauritian people speak around 11 different languages, including english.

ELECTRICITY: The standard voltage is 230 V and the frequency is 50 Hz. That’s the standard voltage (220-240V) in the UK, Europe, Australia and most of Asia and Africa; If you are traveling from the US you will need an adaptor. Their sockets are of type C and G

CURRENCY: The Mauritian Rupee is the official currency in Mauritius, with an equivalent of 1 USD to 36.25 rupees. Dollars and Euros are accepted widely accepted.

SAFETY: Mauritius is probably one of the safest countries to visit in Africa. Pickpockets aren’t too common, and I would be more concerned about not getting scammed, as it is a touristic destination and there are people trying to take advantage of the tourists. There are a couple natural disasters that could hit the island, so try to avoid the cyclone season from November to May.

CLIMATE: Mauritius enjoys a mild tropical climate throughout the year, with summer season (warm and humid weather) from November to april and winter from June to September (not so cool dry weather).

PASSPORT: The majority of countries do not need a visa to enter to Mauritius, including al European citizens, americans, and all the  citizens from these countries.  Some other countries will required to pay a visa on arrival, and a couple others will need to request for a visa in advance. All the information could be found here.

How to get around

To rent a car is by far the best way to move around Mauritius, as it isn’t to big and the gas isn’t too expensive, so it is a good option if you want to get to know the island. If you are thinking about flying between islands, there is only one domestic flight and it is between mainland Mauritius to Rodrigues. Cruises to offshore islands or snorkelling and fishing excursions are offered all over the island, and catamaran is pretty common as well.

Bus is also cheap and fun, and even when there is no national bus service, the regional routes are really good.
