What to expect

LANGUAGE: Mauritius has two official languages, English and French, but the most widely spoken language is Mauritian Creole. Other languages spoken in the country include Hindi, Urdu, Tamil, Telugu, and Mandarin, reflecting the diverse population of the island. Many locals are multilingual and able to speak several languages fluently.

ELECTRICITY: The standard voltage is 230 V and the frequency is 50 Hz. That’s the standard voltage (220-240V) in the UK, Europe, Australia and most of Asia and Africa; If you are traveling from the US you will need an adaptor. Their sockets are of type C and G

CURRENCY: The Mauritian Rupee is the official currency in Mauritius, with an equivalent of 1 USD to 44 rupees (as of 2023). Dollars and Euros are accepted widely accepted.

SAFETY: Mauritius is probably one of the safest countries to visit in Africa. Pickpockets aren’t too common, and I would be more concerned about not getting scammed, as it is a touristic destination and there are people trying to take advantage of the tourists. There are a couple natural disasters that could hit the island, so try to avoid the cyclone season from November to May.

CLIMATE: Mauritius has a tropical climate with warm and humid conditions throughout the year. The temperature typically ranges from 70°F (21°C) to 86°F (30°C), with January and February being the warmest months and July and August being the coolest.

PASSPORT: Visitors to Mauritius from certain countries may require a visa prior to arrival. Some countries, such as the United States, Canada, Australia, and most European countries, are exempt from visa requirements and can stay in Mauritius for up to 90 days without a visa. However, visitors from countries such as India, China, and South Africa will need to obtain a visa before arrival. It’s always a good idea to check the latest visa requirements with the Mauritian embassy or consulate in your home country before traveling to Mauritius.
