Located in South East Asia, Thailand is one of the gems of Asia. The country has so many things to see that is it really hard to choose where to start. With tropical beaches, ancient and impressive ruins, temples and palaces, diverse wildlife, breathtaking landscapes and an amazing nightlife, there is no doubt why Thailand is becoming one of the favorite destinations in Asia.

LANGUAGE
Thai is the official language in Thailand and is spoken by the majority of the citizens (Thailand has some regional languages and dialects as well). English is widely spoken, especially in the main cities, but it always come in handy to learn some words in Thai. Even if they don’t understand you, Thai people are really friendly and will always find a way to help you.
ELECTRICITY
In Thailand the standard voltage is 220 V and the frequency is 50 Hz. That’s the standard voltage in the UK, Europe, Australia and most of Asia and Africa; If you are traveling from the US you will need an adaptor.
CURRENCY
The Thai Baht is the currency of Thailand. You will find the best exchange rate in the country itself, therefore there is no need to exchange before arrival. The Baht is the only legal currency and it is not usually possible to spend other currencies but in tourist sites, where the exchange rate is usually extremely high. Exchanging the money at the hotel is a better option. Major credit cards like Visa and Mastercard are widely accepted. 1 US dollar equals 32.81 Thai Bahts (as of 2020)
SAFETY
Thailand is generally safe, but just as anywhere else, you should be aware of your surroundings. Scams and petty theft can happen. Also, as a female traveler, it is not recommended to go outside with revealing clothes, specially to temples and landmarks.
CLIMATE
Thailand is hot, very hot. The climate in the country is tropical, with a rainy season and a dry season. You could visit all year round, but it is recommended to go in cool dry season, between November and March.
How to get around Thailand
Tuk Tuks
The most famous way of transportation in the country (and my favorite). Tuk Tuks are 3-wheeled vehicles that you have seen in movies for sure. You should at least take one ride while you are here, as it is a memorable experience.
Taxis
Taxis are very common in Bangkok, they all have meters and are very affordable, however this is not the case in the rest of the country. Take your precautions if you are in a rush, as traffic can be a little to crazy.
Motorcycle Taxi
Cheaper and faster than regular taxis, motorcycle taxis are very popular in Thailand in general. Not the most convenient way of getting around if you are traveling with luggage.
Songthaew
Basically, songthaews are small pick-up trucks with a structure in the back that allows them to carry passengers. You will have to wait until the truck is full before it leaves, but it is one of the most affordable ways of transportation in the country, starting at 10 Baths a ride(0.3 cents). They are not really common in Bangkok but in the rest of the country.
Plane
Flighting is the fasted way to get around the country, and there are a couple airlines with a really good domestic network like Thai Airways, AirAsia, and Bangkok Airways that target on-budget travelers.
Train
Thailand has a really extensive railway network, providing a comfortable travel option with scenic views. Although not the cheapest option, trains are still affordable in comparison to bus routes. There are many classes with a variety of prices and amenities.
Metro
Thailand’s metro can be divided in BTS (Skytrain overground rail system) and MRT (Subway). Both networks feature a variety of stops, and operate from 6 am to midnight from Mon-Fri. Click here for more information.
By foot
Walking is a really good way to get to know the cities. It is especially recommended in Bangkok, where every corner offers a new, unseen an impressive landmark or structure that you wouldn’t see otherwise.
Visa Policy
Citizens of 64 countries are allowed to enter Thailand without a visa for up to 30 days: EU, US, Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Cambodia, Canada, Chile, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Israel, Japan, Korea, Kuwait, Laos, Malaysia, Maldives, Mauritius, Myanmar, New Zealand, Oman, Peru, Philippines, Qatar, Russia, Singapore, South Africa, Turkey, Ukraine, United Arab Emirates and Vietnam. They are required to have a valid passport and a return ticket.
Nationals of other nationalities will have to request a visa in advance through the embassy.
