Nassau, the capital of the Bahamas, is the country’s cultural and economic hub—and the most visited destination in the archipelago. Located on New Providence Island, Nassau offers a mix of history, island charm, and vibrant modern life.

Its proximity to Paradise Island (home to the famous Atlantis resort) and convenient international airport make Nassau a common first stop in the Bahamas—and one worth exploring in depth.

History

Originally known as Charles Town, the city was founded by the British in the mid-17th century. After being destroyed by the Spanish in 1684, it was rebuilt and renamed Nassau in honor of William of Orange, who belonged to the House of Nassau.

In the early 18th century, Nassau gained notoriety as a haven for pirates. Its strategic location and shallow waters made it an ideal base for swashbucklers. This lawless period eventually ended when the British regained control in 1718, appointing Woodes Rogers as the first Royal Governor to restore order.

Over the years, Nassau became the political and commercial center of the Bahamas. Its colonial past is still evident in the city’s architecture and landmarks, from old forts to government buildings.

Why Visit Nassau?

If you’re flying into the Bahamas, chances are you’ll land in Nassau. But don’t just pass through—Nassau is a destination in itself. The city blends rich Bahamian heritage with a lively downtown, colorful colonial buildings, and easy access to white-sand beaches.

  • Taxis are available and often used by visitors, but agree on a fare before your ride as they don’t use meters.
  • Jitneys (local buses) are a budget-friendly way to get around, mostly running between downtown and the western parts of the island.
  • Walking is ideal for downtown Nassau and Paradise Island.
  • Car Rentals are available, but driving is on the left-hand side and streets can be narrow and busy in town.
  • Razor Scotters are widely available around town, and can be rented using the app via QR code.

Where to Stay

  • Budget-Friendly: Guesthouses and smaller hotels in downtown Nassau offer a more local and affordable stay.
  • Mid-Range: Many travelers opt for hotels near Cable Beach, which is quieter and offers great ocean views.
  • Luxury: Paradise Island features luxury resorts like Atlantis, with private beaches, casinos, and waterparks.

Day Trips from Nassau

  • Exuma Cays Tour (the one I booked): Many popular boat tours to the Exumas depart from Nassau. You can swim with pigs, visit Thunderball Grotto, and snorkel around Pablo Escobar’s sunken plane.
  • Blue Lagoon Island: A short boat ride away, this private island offers dolphin encounters, beach activities, and a laid-back vibe.
  • Rose Island: A peaceful and less crowded alternative for snorkeling and beach lounging.
