Choosing the right credit card is not an easy task, and that’s why we are here to help. There are a lot of factors to take in consideration, like annual fee, sign-up bonuses, reward points and perks like lounge access. Of course, it all depends on your goals and preferences. In my case, I have to say the Wells Fargo Propel American Express is by far one of my favorite credit cards.

Although it doesn’t offer fancy perks like airport lounges access, it gives you up to 3X reward points for traveling and dining, while charging you nothing but the interest for it! (it comes with a a 0% intro APR period).

Annual Fee

This card has an unbeatable price: It’s FREE!. Yes, that’s right. This card has $0 Annual fee.

Welcome Offer

Earn 20,000 bonus points when you spend $1,000 in purchases in the first 3 months – that’s a $200 cash redemption value!

Rewards

Earn 3 points per $1 spent on dining, traveling (hotels & flights), rides (gas and rideshares), and streaming.

ANNUAL FEE OF $0

Some of the best rewards cards come with an annual fee, this is not the case of the Wells Fargo Propel American Express®. It might be the only card that offers this much ongoing value at no annual cost (assuming you don’t rack up interest charges).

REWARD CATEGORIES

The Wells Fargo Propel American Express® offers a wide a array of categories to earn points from. It earns 3X points on travel (hotels, flights, campgrounds), dining (restaurants, bars, takeout), rideshares (Uber, Lyft), gas, streaming (Amazon Prime, Apple TV, Disney+, Pandora, Spotify…) and 1 point on everything else.

SIGN-UP OFFER

20,000 bonus points when you spend $1,000 in purchases in the first 3 months (a $200 value), with an introductory APR of 0% APR for 12 months on purchases and qualifying balance transfers, and then the ongoing APR of 13.99% – 25.99% Variable APR.

INTERNATIONAL ACCEPTANCE

American Express is not widely accepted cards outside the US. although it doesn’t charge foreign transaction fees, not all the merchants will accept it.

PREMIUM PERKS

Unfortunately, the Wells Fargo Propel American Express® doesn’t come with some of the fancy perks of its competitors, like airport lounge access, travel credits or TSA reimbursement.

My take

The Wells Fargo Propel American Express is, in my opinion, one of the best options in the market right now. It offers a generous rewards rate that you would find in other credit cards with expensive annual fees, allowing customers to get points no only when purchasing flights or hotels but also in gas and rideshares, an excellent option for Road Trips.

Things to keep in mind when choosing a credit card:

  • Consider the fees: Take in consideration your expenses and how much of the fees you are willing / able to pay.
  • Credit Score: Your credit score will determine your availability to apply to some credit cards. The best cards tend to be available to customer with good credit score (a FICO® Score of 670 or higher). Be mindful of this and work on it as overall it will allow you to access to more and better benefits. Applying for cards when you don’t have the enough credit for it could damage your score.
  • Decide based on your interests: If you are a person who travel only once a year, travel lounges might not be something you care about. Find a card that fits your travel habits and that offers the rewards you could use the most.
  • APR: They will vary depending on your credit, and they could go as high as 25.49%! It is always recommended to pay the amount in full before the end of the period to avoid these fees.
