Botswana National Museum
Explore Botswana’s cultural history, artistic heritage, and natural legacy.
The Botswana National Museum is one of the country’s central cultural institutions, offering a broad look at its history, art, and biodiversity. Situated in downtown Gaborone, the museum complex includes indoor galleries and an outdoor area that together reflect the country’s diverse cultural and natural identity. It’s a quiet space to slow down and get a deeper understanding of Botswana beyond the landscapes and wildlife.
What You’ll Find
The museum is divided into several sections, each focusing on a different aspect of Botswana’s heritage.
Cultural Exhibits
Inside the main building, you’ll find displays of traditional crafts, tools, clothing, and household items used by various ethnic groups across Botswana. These artifacts are accompanied by interpretive signs that offer context on everyday life, ceremonies, and the evolution of local customs. The exhibitions don’t try to overwhelm—they present pieces with clarity and space.
Natural History
One part of the museum is dedicated to Botswana’s ecosystems and biodiversity. Taxidermy specimens, plant models, and diagrams of local wildlife offer a scientific look at the flora and fauna of the Kalahari, Okavango Delta, and other ecological zones. While modest in scale, the section offers a useful overview of the country’s natural environments.
Art Gallery
Connected to the museum is the National Art Gallery, which features rotating exhibitions by contemporary and traditional artists from Botswana and the wider region. Mediums range from painting and sculpture to photography and textile work. The gallery space is quiet and informal, offering a chance to explore local perspectives through visual art.
Outdoor Museum Grounds
The museum grounds include reconstructed traditional dwellings that reflect the architectural styles of various communities. There are also shaded walkways, occasional sculpture installations, and benches where visitors can pause between exhibits. The overall layout feels spacious and relaxed.
