Gaborone Game Reserve

A quiet wildlife area inside the city

Located just a few minutes from central Gaborone, the Gaborone Game Reserve is one of Botswana’s smallest protected areas—but also one of its most accessible. Established in 1988, it offers a glimpse of the country’s wildlife and dry savanna habitats without requiring a full-day trip or specialized gear. For those with limited time or without the chance to visit larger parks, it’s a simple way to connect with nature in the middle of the city.

What You’ll See

Despite its compact size (just under 600 hectares), the reserve supports a range of common species native to southern Africa.

  • Mammals: Warthogs, impala, kudu, steenbok, zebras, and vervet monkeys are often visible from the main road loop. Sightings are more frequent in the early morning or just before dusk.
  • Birdlife: The park’s artificial waterhole and woodland areas attract a surprising number of birds, including kingfishers, hornbills, storks, and weavers. There are a few shaded bird hides along the route for those who want to pause and watch quietly.

The reserve is not intended to replicate a full-scale safari, but it offers a good introduction to Botswana’s ecosystems—especially for younger travelers or anyone looking for a relaxed visit.

Getting Around

The park is designed for self-driving, with a single main loop that can be completed in under an hour. The roads are gravel but usually in fair condition and navigable without a 4×4.

There are a few basic picnic sites, bird hides, and resting areas along the way. Facilities are minimal, so bringing your own water and snacks is a good idea. Guided tours are not typically offered, though local operators sometimes include the reserve in Gaborone city tours.
