Amman Citadel
The Amman Citadel, also known as Jabal al-Qal’a, is a historical site located in the heart of Amman, Jordan. It is one of the city’s most significant archaeological sites, offering a glimpse into Jordan’s ancient history. This historic stronghold, which dates back to the Bronze Age, is a living reminder of Jordan’s rich past, the region was formerly home to numerous cultures for ages, including the Roman, Byzantine, and Umayyad.
The Citadel is home to significant structures from various periods, including the Roman Temple of Hercules, which dates back to the 2nd century AD, and the Umayyad Palace, constructed in the 8th century, and the Byzantine church.
Overlooking modern Amman, the Citadel provides panoramic views that juxtapose the ancient ruins with the contemporary cityscape. Artifacts unearthed at the site, including pottery, inscriptions, and sculptures, are displayed in the Jordan Archaeological Museum located within the Citadel. This historic enclave not only offers a profound connection to Jordan’s past but also serves as a cultural and educational hub for both locals and tourists.
