Kerak Castle: A Fortress Above the Clouds
Perched dramatically on a hilltop in the town of Al-Karak, Kerak Castle is one of Jordan’s most impressive Crusader fortresses.
Built in the 1140s by the Crusaders, this massive stone structure was designed to control trade routes between Damascus and Egypt. Its strategic location wasn’t just smart—it was absolutely vital. And you can still see why when you reach the top and look out at the endless valleys below.

How to Get There
Kerak Castle is about a 2-hour drive south of Amman, and most visitors stop by on their way to Petra or the Dead Sea. If you’re road-tripping through Jordan, this makes for a perfect detour—or a history-packed pitstop along the scenic King’s Highway.
What to Expect When You Visit
Kerak Castle is massive, with labyrinth-like tunnels, winding stone staircases, vaulted halls, and dark dungeons that feel like something out of Game of Thrones.
You don’t need a guide, but hiring one or downloading an audio tour definitely helps—especially the castle’s dramatic history of sieges, battles, and legendary figures like Reynald of Châtillon, who once ruled the castle and famously defied Saladin.
Inside the fortress, you’ll find:
- Dark underground chambers
- Panoramic views over the Dead Sea and surrounding countryside
- Interpretive signs giving snippets of history (though sparse, they help)
- The small on-site museum, which adds context to what you’re seeing
