National Museum of Singapore
Where colonial architecture frames stories from its past and future
The National Museum of Singapore, established in 1887, is the oldest museum in the country and a designated national monument. Designed in Neoclassical style and updated with modern architecture, it sits at the heart of Singapore’s Civic District. More than just a building, the museum holds layered stories of empire, local culture, and the rapid transformation of the nation.
A Building with a Past
The museum began as the Raffles Library and Museum and moved to its current location in 1887. Over time, it underwent expansions and a major renovation that reopened in 2006. The mix of white-columned architecture and contemporary interiors marks an enduring presence and evolving identity.
