Arecibo Lighthouse

A historic landmark overlooking the northern coast of Puerto Rico

The Arecibo Lighthouse (Faro de los Morrillos de Arecibo) is a 19th-century structure located on a promontory along Puerto Rico’s northern coast. Built in 1898 during the final year of Spanish rule, it is one of the last lighthouses constructed under Spain in the Americas. The lighthouse continues to serve as a navigational aid while also functioning as part of a cultural and educational park.

What to Expect

Visitors to the Arecibo Lighthouse will find more than just the lighthouse itself. The site has been developed into a park that includes exhibits on Puerto Rico’s maritime history, replicas of historical ships, and displays related to the island’s indigenous, colonial, and pirate past. The park is family-oriented, offering a combination of history, culture, and entertainment.

The lighthouse tower is still active, though the structure has been restored and repurposed to include small exhibits. Surrounding the building, you’ll find viewing points with panoramic vistas of the Atlantic Ocean and Arecibo’s rugged coastline.
