Cueva del Indio

Ancient rock art and dramatic coastal views in Arecibo

Cueva del Indio is a coastal cave and archaeological site located in Arecibo, on Puerto Rico’s northern shore. It is best known for its Taíno petroglyphs, carved into the cave’s walls by the island’s Indigenous people centuries ago. Beyond its cultural significance, the site also features dramatic coastal scenery, with rock arches, cliffs, and strong Atlantic waves crashing against the shore.

What to Expect

The cave is reached via a short trail over uneven limestone terrain, with access involving a steep climb or descent depending on the route taken. Once inside, visitors can see several petroglyphs etched into the cave walls, offering a glimpse into Puerto Rico’s pre-Columbian history.

Above the cave, the surrounding cliffs provide sweeping views of the coastline. Natural arches and sea-carved rock formations make this area especially notable for photography and sightseeing. While the cave itself is the main attraction, many visitors spend time exploring the rock formations and enjoying the coastal landscape.
