Cueva Ventana

A Window Cave Overlooking the Río Grande de Arecibo

Cueva Ventana, or “Window Cave,” is a limestone cave located in Arecibo, Puerto Rico. Its main feature is a large opening that frames a view of the Río Grande de Arecibo valley. It is one of the island’s most recognized natural landmarks and is accessible by a short hike from the roadside.

History

The cave has existed naturally for thousands of years, formed through limestone erosion. For centuries, caves in Puerto Rico, including Cueva Ventana, were significant to the Taíno people, the island’s Indigenous inhabitants, who used them for shelter, ceremonies, and artwork. While there is limited evidence of Taíno activity inside this specific cave, its cultural and geological importance make it a notable site. In more recent years, it has become a managed attraction where visitors can join guided tours to learn about its geology and ecosystem.

What to Expect

  • The Hike – The path to the cave is relatively short but can be uneven and rocky. Good shoes are recommended.
  • The Cave – Inside, the cave is dark and may require a flashlight or headlamp, though tours often provide lighting.
  • The Viewpoint – The highlight of the visit is the large opening at the end of the cave, offering a panoramic view of the Río Grande de Arecibo valley.
  • Wildlife – The cave is home to bats and insects, which are typical in this type of environment.
  • Tours – Guided tours often include information about the cave’s formation, local ecology, and history.
