El Yunque National Forest

Puerto Rico’s Tropical Rainforest

El Yunque National Forest is located in the northeastern part of Puerto Rico, about an hour’s drive from San Juan. It is the only tropical rainforest managed by the U.S. Forest Service and is one of the island’s most visited natural attractions. The forest covers nearly 29,000 acres and is known for its hiking trails, waterfalls, and diverse plant and animal life.

History

The area that is now El Yunque has been valued for centuries. The Taíno people, Puerto Rico’s Indigenous inhabitants, considered the forest sacred. During Spanish colonial times, it was preserved as a natural reserve, and in 1903, it officially became part of the U.S. National Forest System. Since then, El Yunque has been managed for conservation, research, and public use.
