Museo de las Américas
Exploring Culture and History in Old San Juan
Museo de las Américas is located inside the historic Cuartel de Ballajá in Old San Juan. The museum focuses on the history, culture, and art of the Americas, with permanent and temporary exhibitions that highlight the diversity of the region. Visitors can explore themes ranging from Indigenous heritage and African influence to contemporary artistic expression.
History
The museum opened in 1992 with the goal of preserving and sharing the cultural heritage of the Americas. Its location inside Cuartel de Ballajá, a 19th-century military barracks built by the Spanish, adds a historic backdrop to the exhibitions. The building itself was restored and adapted for cultural use after years of serving military purposes, including use by U.S. forces during the 20th century.

What to Expect
Museo de las Américas houses several permanent collections, including:
- Indigenous Cultures of the Americas – Artifacts, tools, and materials that highlight pre-Columbian societies.
- The African Legacy – Exhibits that explore the African diaspora and its impact on Caribbean and American culture.
- Popular Arts of the Americas – Displays of folk art, crafts, and traditions across the region.
In addition to permanent exhibitions, the museum regularly hosts temporary art shows, cultural programs, and educational activities. The layout makes it easy to explore at your own pace, and many exhibits are bilingual in Spanish and English.
