The Best European Destinations for a Motorhome Trip from the UK

A motorhome can be a tremendous source of value for any UK-based holidaymaker looking to travel on a budget. Not only does it provide a means of seeing all that the UK has to offer, but it can also be a great way to travel the continent and explore the best destinations in Europe – provided that you have the right motorhome insurance.

But exactly which European destinations are best suited to this form of travel? Let’s consider the options.

France: The Land of Easy Touring

Travel across the channel, either via the tunnel, or via ferry, and you’ll end up in France. As such, it’s arguably the easiest and most obvious destination. You’ll be able to soak in Normandy, including the beaches where the Allies landed on D-Day, as well as the world-famous vineyards of Bordeaux and the Loire Valley.

There are special camping-car parks, called Aires, throughout the country. They’re often free, and open throughout the year. If you’re looking to travel the country in a motorhome, then, you’ll want to familiarise yourself with them.

Germany: A Journey Through History and Nature

Germany is another excellent choice, thanks largely to its wealth of imposing scenery, majestic castles, deep forests and winding rivers. Travel the famous Romantic Road, for example, and you’ll discover incredible medieval settlements like Rothenburg ob der Tauber – but that’s just the start of what’s on offer.

Much like France, the infrastructure here is excellent. There’s a network of parking areas that cater exclusively to motorhomes. Known as Stellplätze, they offer a reliable, no-frills place to pull up for the night.

The Netherlands: A Picturesque and Relaxed Tour

Much like France, the Netherlands is reasonably accessible – and it’s small enough to be explored with the help of a campervan. You can drive from one campsite to the next with relative ease, which means that you’ll rarely spend more than a few hours on the road.

The country is built with cycling in mind. This is evident in major cities like Amsterdam, where bicycles are ubiquitous. But it’s also the case in the countryside, which is criss-crossed with cycling trails and pathways. There are fields of endless tulips to discover, as well as the iconic windmills of Kinderdijk, and much more besides.

There are parking areas in the Netherlands, too. In this case, they’re known as Camperplaats. Rather than being solely dedicated to motorhomes, in most cases, you’ll find that these are large, unsupervised car parks, with an area set aside for larger vehicles.
