Tipping in Singapore

What You Should (and Shouldn’t) Know

Singapore’s clean streets, efficient service, and well-organized systems often leave travelers wondering whether tipping is expected—especially if you’re used to tipping cultures elsewhere. The short answer? It’s not customary here. While a few exceptions exist, the basic rule is simple: most places include service charges, and tipping isn’t necessary.

Restaurants & Cafés

In full-service restaurants, a 10% service charge is usually included in your bill, and there’s no need to tip beyond that. Hawker centers, cafés, and food courts—where much of Singaporean life happens—add no extra charge, and tipping there is uncommon.

Hotels & Concierge Services

At upscale hotels, you won’t be expected to tip bellhops or housekeepers—but if someone gives you standout, personalized help, a token of appreciation (like S$1–2 per bag or S$2–5 per night) is welcomed, though still optional.

Taxi Drivers

Taxi drivers don’t expect tips—many locals don’t tip at all. Should you feel generous, rounding up the fare is a simple and discreet way to acknowledge kindness or assistance.

Tour Guides & Personal Services

No tipping is required for city guides, but if you truly appreciated a memorable or customized experience, S$5–10 per day is a warm gesture, not an obligation. Similarly, for spa or beauty services, rounding up or adding 5–10% is thoughtful but optional.

What Locals Say

Many locals suggest that recognition (a kind word or email to management) often means more than a tip.

When Tipping Might Be Okay

  • Surprise Acts of Kindness: A small tip or red envelope can be meaningful if someone goes above and beyond—especially in hotels.
  • Direct Tips to Individuals: Handing a tip to the person who helped you (e.g. luggage, heavy door) is discreet and appreciated.
  • Feedback Over Cash: A letter, review, or direct commendation for staff is often more valued and culturally appropriate.

In Singapore, tipping isn’t a sign of appreciation—it’s simply not part of how systems are built or how locals show gratitude. Still, when service truly stands out, small, thoughtful gestures or sincere words often mean more to the receiver.
