History of the Jaipur Palace

The story of the City Palace dates back to the 18th century. When Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, founded Jaipur in 1727, he wanted a grand residence that reflected on the opulence of the era, so, he built the City Palace as his home and the heart of the royal court. Construction of the palace was a major project, and combined elements of traditional Rajasthani architecture with Mughal influences. The design was all about grandeur and symmetry. Over the years, the palace underwent several expansions and renovations.

The complex is made up of several parts, a complex of courtyards, gardens, and palatial structures. The Mubarak Mahal, which was built to welcome royal guests, It’s now a museum showcasing an array of royal artifacts and textiles. The Chandra Mahal is where the royal family lived, and even today, it’s still a residence for the Jaipur royal family.

The Diwan-i-Aam, or Hall of Public Audience, is where the Maharaja met with his subjects, being the center for many royal events and decisions. Another highlight is the Pritam Niwas Chowk, a courtyard with four stunning gates, each representing a different season. These gates are adorned with beautiful artwork and are a favorite spot for photos.
The intricate details of the doors and hand- painted oils are a testament to the art and skill of the crafters of the time.
