Bal Harbour Shops

An open-air luxury retail center set in landscaped tropical surroundings.

Located in Bal Harbour Village, just north of Miami Beach, Bal Harbour Shops opened in 1965 on the site of a former WWII army barracks. Conceived by developer Stanley Whitman, it was designed to contrast conventional indoor malls by combining upscale retail with open-air gardens and shaded walkways.

Design and Layout

The center spans around 450,000 square feet across several low-rise buildings arranged in open-air courtyards. Palm-lined walkways, koi ponds, fountains, and lush plantings frame the retail spaces. An expansion plan is underway, adding approximately 240,000 square feet of new store and dining space—the biggest enhancement since the 1980s.

Retail Mix

Anchored by Neiman Marcus and Saks Fifth Avenue, Bal Harbour Shops hosts approximately 100 luxury boutiques. Early tenants included FAO Schwarz and Martha’s salon, while today’s retailers feature brands such as Gucci, Chanel, Prada, Valentino, Tiffany & Co., and many others across fashion, accessories, and jewelry.

Dining Options

The complex includes several restaurants and cafés, from Italian options like Carpaccio to contemporary venues such as Makoto, Le Zoo, Hillstone, and dessert choices like Bianco Gelato. Many offer outdoor seating set among shaded walkways and landscaping.
