Bass Museum of Art
A contemporary art museum in Miami Beach
The Bass Museum of Art, usually referred to as The Bass, is located in Miami Beach on Collins Avenue, near Collins Park. The museum was founded in 1963 after the City of Miami Beach accepted a donation of artworks from collectors John and Johanna Bass. It occupies a former Art Deco library building from 1930, which has been adapted and expanded for museum use.
Collection and Exhibitions
The Bass primarily focuses on contemporary art. Its collection includes works from international artists across different mediums—painting, sculpture, photography, video, and installations. While the permanent collection is relatively small, the museum is known for its rotating exhibitions that change throughout the year, bringing in both established and emerging artists.
Past exhibitions have featured artists such as Ugo Rondinone, Paola Pivi, and Haegue Yang. Exhibitions are often complemented with talks, workshops, and guided tours.
Architecture and Design
The museum is housed in a building originally designed by architect Russell Pancoast in the Art Deco style. Renovations and expansions, most recently by Arata Isozaki and later by David Gauld, have modernized the space while retaining its original character. The result combines historic details with contemporary gallery spaces.

Education and Programs
The Bass runs several educational and community programs, including art classes, workshops, and events for children and families. The museum also offers guided tours and special programs aimed at making contemporary art more accessible to the public.
