Coral Castle
A mysterious monument of limestone and legend on Miami’s fringe.
The Coral Castle is a unique and mysterious structure located in Homestead, Florida, about 25 miles (40 km) south of Miami. It was built by a Latvian immigrant named Edward Leedskalnin between 1923 and 1951. The site is equal parts sculpture garden and architectural puzzle.
The purpose-built castle, created without modern machinery, still raises questions about how one person moved massive stones alone, since some of the blocks weight over 30 tons.
The Story Behind Coral Castle
Leedskalnin began carving in 1923, using hand tools, more than 1,100 tons of coral and limestone and working mostly at night. What makes this structure amazing is that Leedskalnin worked alone and without modern machinery.
Over time, the stone walls, towers, sundial, crescent moon sculpture, and furniture-like carvings were shaped with precision. He claimed to know the secrets of the pyramids, but divulged none of his secrets before passing in 1951, just said he used the laws of physics, which has left everyone guessing ever since.
The whole place was built as a tribute to Ed’s lost love, Agnes Scuffs, who left him the day before her wedding in Latvia. So, he moved to Florida and spent nearly 30 years building Coral Castle as a monument to his unrequited love. The story gives the place a kind of romantic, yet eerie vibe.
What Stands Today
Visitors will find deliberately balanced gates (once operable with a finger’s push), a sundial and telescope tower, various carved motifs, and even coral benches and chairs—all built around a courtyard that echoes the creator’s solitude. There’s also a two-story tower that Ed actually lived in while he worked on the castle.
Today, Coral Castle is a popular tourist spot. People come to see it and try to figure out how one guy could pull off such an incredible feat all by himself. You can take a guided tour to learn more about Ed’s life, the legends surrounding the place, and all the strange theories about how he did it.
