Miami Beach
A barrier island known for its beaches, historic architecture, and active public spaces.
Miami Beach is a barrier island located east of downtown Miami, connected to the mainland by several causeways. It is known for its long stretches of sandy shoreline, historic districts, and a mix of residential, commercial, and recreational areas. The city combines beachfront space with urban amenities, making it both a residential community and a visitor destination.
Beaches
The eastern edge of Miami Beach runs along the Atlantic Ocean, with public access points available along most of the shoreline. The sand is wide, with designated swimming areas and lifeguard towers positioned at regular intervals. The Beachwalk, a paved path parallel to the shore, is popular for walking, running, and cycling.
Architecture and Urban Layout
Miami Beach is home to the Miami Beach Architectural District, better known as the Art Deco District. Concentrated mainly in South Beach, this area features pastel-colored buildings, geometric details, and neon signage from the 1920s to 1940s. Streets are laid out in a grid, with Ocean Drive and Collins Avenue serving as main thoroughfares for both pedestrian and vehicle traffic.
Recreation and Facilities
Public parks, volleyball courts, and fitness areas are located along the beachfront. The Beachwalk connects different neighborhoods, allowing easy movement between the southern and northern parts of the island without using major roads. Restrooms, showers, and shaded seating areas can be found at multiple access points.
