Zoo Miami
A large open-air zoo with diverse ecosystems and animal species
Zoo Miami occupies close to 750 acres southwest of downtown Miami and is noted for being the only subtropical zoo in the continental U.S. It houses more than 3,000 animals representing around 500 species across approximately 100 exhibits. With roughly four miles of walkways and over 300 developed acres, it offers a vast and varied experience
Exhibit Zones
Zoo Miami is organized into geographic sections that replicate natural habitats:
- Florida: Mission Everglades – Native species including alligators, panthers, river otters, spoonbills, and more, including a ride that mimics an Everglades airboat experience.
- Asia, Africa, Australia, Amazon & Beyond – Large, open-air moated exhibits across these regions feature animals like tigers, elephants, koalas, giraffes, chimps, and jaguars.
- Wings of Asia Aviary – A free-flight aviary hosting around 85 bird species.
The grounds include more than 1,000 tree and plant species, complementing the animal exhibits and lending a park-like setting

- Transportation and Access: Visitors can use narrated Safari Tram Tours for easy travel through Asia and Africa zones. Rentals like pedal boats (shaped like ducks or swans), Safari Cycles, strollers, and wheelchairs are also available for getting around.
- Animal Presentations: Daily keeper talks, feedings, and educational sessions take place throughout the day, offering insight into animal habits and care routines.

Conservation & Education
Zoo Miami is active in global conservation through more than 30 programs, including species survival plans. It has reported breeding success with Komodo dragons, Cuban crocodiles, and tree kangaroos.
In 2024, it successfully hatched Texas horned lizards for reintroduction efforts and celebrated a rare first-time fatherhood by a 135-year-old Galapagos tortoise, highlighting its ongoing role in species preservation.
