Vieques is an island off the eastern coast of Puerto Rico, known for its quiet beaches, wild horses, and natural beauty. While it’s smaller and less crowded than the main island, it offers plenty to see and do.. It is famous for being the home to brightest bioluminescent bay in the world (declared by the Guinness World Record in 2006), Mosquito Bay, as well as beach coves and the largest natural wildlife refuge in The Caribbean, 60% of Vieques is covered by it.

History

Vieques has a rich history that combines indigenous Taíno heritage with Spanish colonial influences. The island was historically used for agriculture and later served as a military training area for the U.S. Navy, which has shaped much of its modern landscape. Today, Vieques is a peaceful destination where history and nature intersect, from the remnants of old sugar plantations to preserved forts and natural reserves.

Why Visit Vieques

Vieques is ideal for travelers who enjoy a slower pace, nature, and unique outdoor experiences. The island is known for its pristine beaches, wildlife, and the famous bioluminescent bay, Mosquito Bay. It’s a place to relax, explore, and connect with nature in a way that feels untouched compared to more crowded tourist areas in Puerto Rico.

How to Get Around

Most visitors arrive in Vieques by ferry from Fajardo or by small flights from San Juan. On the island, renting a car is the most convenient way to get around, as public transportation is limited. Many of the beaches, natural reserves, and attractions are spread out, so having a car allows for flexibility. Scooters and bicycles are also popular options for short distances, especially near town areas like Isabel Segunda or Esperanza.

Day Trips from Vieques

Vieques is an island, so most activities stay local. However, visitors sometimes combine trips with nearby Culebra for snorkeling or beach hopping via boat tours. Day trips usually involve visiting several beaches in a single day, exploring the island’s natural reserves, or arranging night tours to see the bioluminescent bay.
