Moremi Game Reserve

Moremi is located in the north of Botswana, inside the Okavango Delta. While the Delta itself is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Moremi is a protected reserve that was actually designated by the local BaTawana people—making it the first wildlife sanctuary in Africa created by an indigenous tribe.

Getting to Moremi usually involves driving from Maun, which is the closest major hub and gateway to the Delta. From there, you can join guided game drives, fly into a lodge by bush plane, or arrange a mobile safari. Either way, expect bumpy roads, dramatic landscapes, and a whole lot of adventure.

Why Moremi is a Safari Dream

Diverse ecosystems: From mopane woodlands and floodplains to lagoons and savannas, the variety of landscapes in Moremi means you’ll see a wide range of wildlife in one place.

Amazing wildlife sightings: You’ve got a chance of spotting the Big Five (yes, even rhinos, thanks to conservation efforts), along with leopards, giraffes, hippos, and countless birds.

Less crowded than other parks: Botswana keeps tourism low-impact, which means fewer vehicles and a more intimate experience. You’re not going to be stuck in a safari traffic jam like in some other countries.

Water + land safaris: Moremi gives you the best of both worlds. In the dry season, game drives offer prime viewing, while in the wetter months, boat and mokoro (traditional canoe) excursions open up new ways to explore.

When to Visit

Moremi is a year-round destination, but most travelers prefer the dry season from June to October, when animals congregate around water sources and the roads are easier to manage. That said, the green (wet) season from November to March brings lush scenery, baby animals, and excellent bird watching—just be ready for more mud and fewer crowds.
