Straddling the border between Zimbabwe and Zambia, Victoria Falls is one of the largest and most awe-inspiring waterfalls on Earth. Locally known as Mosi-oa-Tunya—“The Smoke That Thunders”—this UNESCO World Heritage Site stretches over 1.7 kilometers wide and plunges 108 meters into the Batoka Gorge below. The spray alone can be seen from over 30 kilometers away. You’ve probably seen it in documentaries, travel books, or maybe even on someone’s bucket list Pinterest board.

Whether you’re visiting from the Botswana side via Kasane or exploring Zimbabwe, Zambia, or even Namibia, one thing is for sure: Victoria Falls lives up to the hype—and then some.

How to Visit from Botswana

If you’re traveling through northern Botswana, especially staying in Kasane, Victoria Falls is an easy and incredibly worthwhile day trip. You can cross the border into Zimbabwe or Zambia (most tours go to Zimbabwe, where the views are a bit more iconic), and spend the day exploring the falls and the charming town of Victoria Falls.

When to Go

Each season offers a completely different experience:

  • High water season (Feb–May): The falls are at their most dramatic. Get ready for tons of spray and thunderous noise. Some trails may be soaked!
  • Dry season (Sep–Dec): You’ll see more of the rock formations and gorge structure, and it’s the best time for swimming in Devil’s Pool or taking photos without water on your lens every two seconds.
