Tipping in Bahamas:

A Traveler’s Guide

Tipping in the Bahamas is customary and appreciated across various services. While gratuities are often included in bills, understanding when and how much to tip can enhance your travel experience and show respect for local customs. This guide provides an overview of tipping practices in the Bahamas to help you navigate with confidence.

Tour Guides

When to Tip:

If you’re joining a group tour, tipping is often the norm. For private guides or drivers, tips are definitely expected.

How Much to Tip:

  • Group Tours: For half-day or full-day group tours (like those to the Exumas or snorkeling trips), tipping around $5–10 per person is appreciated.
  • Private Tours: If you’re on a private boat charter or custom excursion, consider tipping $15–30 per person depending on the length and quality of the experience.
  • Boat Crew: If there’s a captain and crew involved, you can split the tip between them or ask the captain to distribute it.
  • General Rule: If the guide went out of their way to ensure you had a great time, a tip goes a long way—and it’s always appreciated.

Restaurants & Cafés

When to Tip:

In most mid- to high-end restaurants, a service charge may already be included. But if it’s not—or if the service was excellent—leaving a tip is customary.

How Much to Tip:

  • If no service charge is added: 10% to 15%
  • If there is a service charge: round up or leave an extra $3-$5 as a thank you

Taxis & Ride Services

When to Tip:

Tipping taxi drivers isn’t required, but rounding up the fare is common.

How Much to Tip:

  • Round up to the nearest dollar or add an extra $5 for long rides

Pro tip: Agree on the fare in advance for regular taxis, especially if the meter isn’t used.

Hotels & Guesthouses

When to Tip:

Hospitality staff typically expect a small tip for helping with luggage or providing extra services.

How Much to Tip:

  • Porters: Tipping $1–2 per bag is customary.
  • Housekeeping: Leaving $1–3 per night is appreciated, especially for extended stays.
  • Concierge Services: If the concierge provides special assistance, a tip of $5–10 is appropriate.

Currency & Payment

  • Accepted Currency: Both Bahamian and U.S. dollars are widely accepted.
  • Cash Tips: While credit cards are commonly used, carrying small denominations of cash is helpful for tipping.

Tipping in the Bahamas is a way to show appreciation for good service and contributes to the livelihood of service workers. Being aware of local tipping customs ensures a respectful and enjoyable travel experience.
