Feeding the Sharks at Pier One

Marine Encounters in Freeport

Located at the edge of Freeport’s harbor, Pier One is a waterfront restaurant known not just for its views but for its nightly shark feeding. As the sun sets, spotlights shine into the water, drawing in groups of Caribbean reef sharks that circle just below the surface. It’s a unique encounter—one that blurs the line between dining and wildlife observation.

While the feeding event is hosted by the restaurant, the focus for many visitors is less about the menu and more about the chance to watch these marine predators up close in a calm, controlled environment.

A Natural Setting with Unobstructed Views

The restaurant is built on stilts directly over the water, offering uninterrupted views of the surrounding harbor and open sea. As night falls, lights installed under the deck illuminate the water, attracting fish and eventually, the sharks.

What makes the scene compelling is how close it all is. The reef sharks aren’t enclosed—they swim freely, coming and going as they please. You’re separated from them only by the edge of the deck, making the experience feel surprisingly direct.

The setting itself is relatively quiet. There are no shows, stages, or loud announcements. The feeding is simple: pieces of fish are lowered into the water, and within minutes, sleek shapes begin to circle beneath the surface.

What Kind of Sharks You Might See

The most commonly seen species at Pier One are Caribbean reef sharks—a species frequently found around the Bahamas. They’re medium-sized, often measuring between 5 and 8 feet, and are known for their calm, inquisitive movements.

On some evenings, other marine life, such as tarpon, barracuda, or stingrays, may make an appearance as well. The underwater lighting creates a natural spotlight effect, making it easier to observe their movements without disturbing the water.
