9 Jordan Travel Tips: What to Know Before You Go

If Jordan is on your travel bucket list, you’re in for an unforgettable adventure. From the ancient city of Petra to the stunning landscapes of Wadi Rum, the country has something for everyone. But before you pack your bags and hop on that plane, check out these 7 travel tips to make your trip to Jordan smooth, enjoyable, and totally epic.

1. Know your Visa requirements

Planning is essential when we want to travel to another country and Jordan is no exception. Most travelers can obtain a visa on arrival, but it’s crucial to check the specific requirements for your nationality. Check the visa requirements for your nationality. Some travelers can obtain visas on arrival, while others need to apply in advance.

When in doubt, check our post about the Visa requirements for Jordan, where we go in detail about all of the requirements.

Also, consider purchasing the Jordan Pass, which covers visa fees and grants access to over 40 attractions, including Petra and Jerash.

2. Weather Awareness and best Time to Visit

Jordan experiences diverse climates. Summers can be scorching, while winters are mild. Plan your wardrobe accordingly, especially if you’re visiting desert areas like Wadi Rum.

Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) offer pleasant temperatures and fewer crowds. Summers can be extremely hot, especially in the desert regions like Wadi Rum, with temperatures often exceeding 40°C (104°F), while winters are cooler, with potential snowfall in the north.

3. Be respectful to the culture

Jordan is a predominantly Muslim country. Dress modestly, especially in rural areas and religious sites. Women should consider wearing long sleeves and pants or skirts, and carrying a scarf for head covering when necessary.

Likewise in the Asian continent there is a deep respect for the elderly so it is important to treat them with full attention and kindness.

4. Learn some basic words in Arabic

Arabic is the official language, but English is widely spoken in tourist areas. Learning a few basic Arabic phrases can enhance your interactions with locals and show respect for the culture.

5. Carry cash

The Jordanian Dinar (JOD) is the local currency. Credit cards are accepted in many places, but it’s advisable to carry cash, especially when traveling to remote areas or shopping in local markets.

5. Take some safety measures

One of the most frequent questions that usually arise is whether it is safe to travel to Jordan, especially when traveling solo. Jordan is considered one of the safest countries in the Middle East. However, always stay informed about local conditions, avoid border areas with Syria and Iraq, and exercise standard travel precautions.

It’s still essential to remain vigilant, especially in crowded areas. Some things to avoid are walking alone in dark areas, leaving your belongings unattended, and accepting foreign objects from strangers. I went to Jordan by myself, and in my case, I didn’t experience issues of any kind. Everyone was very kind and welcoming, but I also tried to be as cautious as possible.

6. Respect Religious Practices

During Ramadan (a month-long period of fasting observed by Muslims), eating, drinking, or smoking in public during daylight hours is discouraged. Be mindful of prayer times and the call to prayer, which occurs five times a day.

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, and the exact dates of Ramadan change every year. This is because Islam uses a calendar based on the cycles of the Moon.

7. Allocate enough time to visit Petra

Exploring Petra, the ancient Nabatean city carved into rose-colored sandstone cliffs, is a highlight of any trip to Jordan. Allocate at least two days to explore Petra thoroughly.

Arrive early in the morning to beat the crowds and enjoy cooler temperatures. Wear comfortable walking shoes, as exploring Petra involves a lot of walking and some uneven terrain. Don’t forget to bring sunscreen, a hat, and plenty of water to stay hydrated throughout the day. Finally, do not miss the iconic sights like the Treasury, the Monastery, and the Royal Tombs.

8. Try the local cuisine

Don’t miss trying traditional dishes like mansaf (lamb with yogurt sauce) and falafel. Street food is generally safe, but choose vendors with high turnover to ensure freshness.

9. Stay Connected

Consider purchasing a ESIM, or a local SIM card, which is affordable and provides reliable internet access. Major providers include Zain, Orange, and Umniah.

I used to just disconnect on my trips, but traveling as a solo female, being completely off the grid might not be the best idea, as emergencies can happen. I have been buying E-SIMs from Airalo for years now without problems
