Fajardo
Fajardo is located on the eastern coast of Puerto Rico, about an hour’s drive from San Juan. Known for its marinas, natural reserves, and access to offshore islands, it has become a popular base for travelers looking to explore Puerto Rico’s waters and nearby cays. The town itself is small, but its location makes it an important hub for nature lovers and those planning boat trips to surrounding areas.
History
Fajardo was founded in 1772 and has long been tied to fishing, agriculture, and maritime activities. During the colonial period, it developed as a coastal settlement with strong ties to trade and the sea. Over time, the town became recognized for its port and proximity to smaller islands, which made it an important stop for both commercial and recreational boating. Today, while it maintains its small-town character, Fajardo is better known as a starting point for trips to places like Vieques, Culebra, and the surrounding natural reserves.

Why Visit Fajardo?
Fajardo is not as urban as San Juan, but it offers a different perspective on Puerto Rico. The town serves as a gateway to some of the island’s most notable natural attractions, including bioluminescent bays, offshore islands, and coral reefs. Visitors come for outdoor activities such as snorkeling, kayaking, hiking, and sailing, but also for the calm pace compared to the larger cities.
How to Get Around Fajardo
Fajardo is best explored by car, as public transportation options are limited. Renting a car gives you flexibility to reach beaches, the marina, and nearby attractions. Taxis and ride-hailing apps are available but may not be as frequent as in San Juan. Walking is possible in small areas, but most points of interest are spread out.
