10 Must-Do Experiences in Cairo
Egypt’s Vibrant Capital
Cairo is a city of contrasts—where millennia-old pyramids rub shoulders with modern cafés, and narrow souk alleys reveal centuries of culture. It’s noisy, energetic, and endlessly fascinating. Whether you’re seeking iconic landmarks, hands-on history, or local hangouts, this city delivers. Here are ten essential experiences in Cairo that offer a balanced snapshot of its past, present—and everything in between.
Visit the Pyramids of Giza and the Sphinx
The Pyramids of Giza are Egypt’s most iconic archaeological site and a must-visit for any first-time traveler. The site includes the Great Pyramid of Khufu, the smaller pyramids of Khafre and Menkaure, and the Great Sphinx.
Wanderlust Tip: Go early in the morning or at golden hour for stunning light and fewer crowds. Book a camel ride with a reputable local for a unique viewpoint — just make sure the animals are treated responsibly.
Discover the Cairo Citadel
The Cairo Citadel (also known as the Citadel of Salah El-Din) is one of the most iconic landmarks in the Egyptian capital. Originally built in the 12th century by Salah El-Din (Saladin) to protect Cairo from Crusader invasions, the citadel remained the seat of Egypt’s rulers for nearly 700 years.
Wanderlust Tip: Combine the visit with nearby medieval mosques in Islamic Cairo.
Walk Along the Nile Corniche
A beloved riverside promenade spanning several kilometers, great at any time of day for a relaxing stroll or sunset watch.
Wanderlust Tip: Try a felucca ride from here for a classic Nile experience.
Experience Pharaonic Village
A living-history attraction where actors demonstrate ancient Egyptian life—from papyrus-making to mummification—in a recreated Nile-era setting.
Wanderlust Tip: Ideal for families and immersive educators.
Ride a Camel Near the Pyramids
Experience the classic camel ride with the Pyramids as your backdrop and enjoy gorgeous photo opportunities.
Wanderlust Tip: Agree on price (in EGP or USD) upfront and look for treated, healthy camels.
Shop at Khan El-Khalili Bazaar
Khan el-Khalili, right in the heart of Cairo, is a centuries-old bazaar that has been a bustling hub of trade and culture since the 14th century. This historic market is a great place to shop for souvenirs like spices, jewelry, and textiles. It’s also one of the oldest markets in the Middle East.
Wanderlust Tip: Bargaining is expected. Walk away politely if the price isn’t right—vendors often call you back.
Visit the Egyptian Museum (or Grand Egyptian Museum)
The Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square houses thousands of ancient artifacts, including the treasures of Tutankhamun. The new Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) near the Pyramids is set to open soon and will host even more collections. The GEM is significantly larger and more modern, and it is also designed to offer a more immersive and educational experience for visitors.
Wanderlust Tip: Allow at least 2–3 hours to explore. A guide or audio tour can be helpful to navigate key highlights.
Explore the Saqqara Pyramids
Long before the smooth-sided pyramids of Giza captured the world’s imagination, Saqqara was built. At the heart of Saqqara stands the Step Pyramid of Djoser, the world’s oldest stone monument of its kind, dating back over 4,600 years to the 27th century BCE. This isn’t just another pyramid—it’s where pyramid-building began.
Wanderlust Tip: Go early, wear comfortable shoes and pack water and sun protection.
Visit the Coptic Museum and Hanging Church in Cairo
Coptic Cairo is one of the most spiritually significant places in the Egypt, home to some of the oldest Christian churches in the world. This neighborhood holds deep religious and historical roots—where Christianity thrived long before Islam arrived in Egypt.
Wanderlust Tip: Entry is inexpensive and the area is compact—easy to explore in a few hours.
Visit The National Museum of Egyptian Civilization
While many museums in Egypt focus on the grandeur of ancient pharaohs, the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization (NMEC) invites you to take a broader—and more personal—look at the Egyptian story. Opened in 2021 in the heart of Old Cairo, this beautifully curated museum walks you through the entire span of Egyptian civilization, from prehistoric cultures and ancient dynasties to Islamic art and contemporary traditions.
Wanderlust Tip: Come early to beat the crowds and dress modestly, this area of Cairo is more traditional.
