The Cairo Citadel:

A Timeless Fortress with City Views

Perched high above the city on the Mokattam Hills, the Cairo Citadel (also known as the Citadel of Salah El-Din) is one of the most iconic landmarks in the Egyptian capital. Originally built in the 12th century by Salah El-Din (Saladin) to protect Cairo from Crusader invasions, the citadel remained the seat of Egypt’s rulers for nearly 700 years.

Today, it’s a sprawling complex filled with mosques, museums, gardens, and sweeping views of Cairo’s skyline—including, on a clear day, the distant silhouettes of the Giza Pyramids. It’s the perfect mix of history, culture, and photography gold.

What to See Inside

The Mosque of Muhammad Ali

The most famous structure within the citadel, this Ottoman-style mosque is known for its grand domes, alabaster walls, and panoramic terrace. Built in the 19th century by Muhammad Ali Pasha, it often gets mistaken for Istanbul’s Blue Mosque — and it’s just as photogenic.

Al-Nasir Muhammad Mosque

A more understated, medieval-style mosque dating back to the 14th century, built during the Mamluk period.

Military Museum

Housed in former royal palaces, this museum tells the story of Egypt’s military history, from ancient times through modern wars. Think cannons, tanks, and lots of uniforms.

Carriage Museum & Police Museum

Smaller but fun to walk through, especially if you’re interested in Egypt’s royal era or want a look at how justice was handled centuries ago.

Terrace Views

The elevated position of the Citadel offers some of the best views in Cairo — a perfect place for photos or to simply take a moment and soak in the city’s energy from above.

A Quick History

Commissioned by Salah El-Din in 1176, the citadel was designed to fortify Cairo against potential Crusader attacks. Its construction used stone from the pyramids of Giza (yes, really), and it later evolved into a royal residence and government seat under the Mamluks, Ottomans, and eventually Muhammad Ali.

The citadel’s long history is reflected in its architecture — a fascinating blend of Islamic, medieval, and Ottoman influences — and in the many rulers who expanded and renovated it over the centuries.

Tips for Visiting the Cairo Citadel

  • Go early or late: The midday sun can be intense, especially in warmer months. Visiting in the morning or late afternoon gives you better light and cooler temps.
  • Dress respectfully: This is a religious and cultural site. Covering shoulders and knees is recommended, especially when entering mosques.
  • Bring water: There are vendors inside, but it’s always a good idea to have a bottle with you.
