The Citadel of Qaitbay in Alexandria

A coastal fortress with centuries of history

The Citadel of Qaitbay is one of Alexandria’s most iconic landmarks. Built in 1477 by Sultan Al-Ashraf Qaitbay to defend the city from Ottoman invaders, the fortress was strategically placed on the exact site where the legendary Lighthouse of Alexandria (Pharos) once stood — one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.

Today, it serves not just as a historical monument, but as a symbol of Alexandria’s past — combining medieval Islamic architecture with a legacy that dates back to ancient times.

A Stroll Through the Citadel

The thick stone walls, cannon placements, and arched corridors reflect a period when Alexandria needed to defend itself against naval attacks. The citadel is surprisingly well-preserved, and you’re free to wander through its inner chambers, spiral staircases, and lookout points.

Inside, you’ll find a small maritime museum and interpretive signs that explain the citadel’s role throughout history. But the best are the panoramic views of the Mediterranean coastline — especially at sunset.

*Quick Note: Employees inside will insist in taking pictures of you. Just keep in mind, they will ask you for a tip afterwards if you say yes.

What Makes It Special?

  • Built with repurposed stones from the ruins of the Lighthouse of Alexandria.
  • Offers one of the best ocean views in Alexandria.
  • A great mix of history, architecture, and natural beauty.
  • Popular with both tourists and locals — especially on weekends.
  • One of the few historical spots in Egypt with direct ties to ancient wonders.

Getting There

The Citadel is located at the tip of the Corniche, Alexandria’s main seaside promenade. You can walk from downtown if you’re staying nearby or take a short Uber or taxi ride. It’s also easily combined with visits to the Alexandria Library, Corniche walk, or Abu al-Abbas al-Mursi Mosque.
