The Temple of Isis at Philae

A Sacred Gem of Aswan

If you’re planning a trip to Aswan, the Temple of Isis on Philae Island is a stop you simply can’t skip. Peacefully perched on the Nile, surrounded by palm trees and ancient legends, this temple is one of Egypt’s most atmospheric and photogenic ruins.

Dedicated to Isis, the goddess of magic, motherhood, and healing, the temple was once a major pilgrimage site. Today, it’s a dream for travelers looking to blend history with a bit of serenity. Accessible only by boat, the journey to the island feels like part of the adventure.

A Bit of History

The Temple of Isis was originally built during the Ptolemaic dynasty, around the 3rd century BCE, and continued to be expanded by Roman emperors. Even as Christianity took hold in Egypt, the worship of Isis persisted here until well into the 6th century CE—making this one of the last ancient temples to remain active in Egypt.

But the temple’s most incredible chapter may be its modern one. In the 20th century, the construction of the Aswan High Dam caused rising waters that threatened to submerge Philae. Thanks to an extraordinary UNESCO-led project, the entire temple complex was carefully dismantled and relocated to the nearby Agilkia Island—stone by stone—saving it from being lost forever.

What to See

The temple complex is impressively preserved, and you’ll find detailed reliefs depicting Isis, Horus, and Osiris, as well as columns crowned with beautifully carved capitals. Look out for the birth house (mammisi), small chapels, and even Christian crosses etched into the walls from when the temple was later converted into a church,

Tips for Visiting

How to get there: You’ll need to take a short boat ride from the Philae Marina near Aswan. Tours often include the boat fare, but if you go independently, expect to negotiate.

Best time to visit: Early morning or late afternoon to avoid the heat—and catch the softest light for photos.

Don’t miss: The Sound and Light Show in the evening is a popular way to experience the site under the stars, with dramatic storytelling and atmospheric lighting.
