Luxor Museum

A Hidden Gem Along the Nile

Located along the east bank of the Nile, just a short walk from Luxor Temple, the Luxor Museum is often overshadowed by the city’s grand temples and tombs. But for those who want to dive deeper into the stories behind the statues and sarcophagi, this museum is an absolute treasure.

Far from the chaotic halls of larger museums, the Luxor Museum offers a calm, intimate, and beautifully curated experience. Every item is carefully selected and impeccably displayed, with detailed explanations in Arabic and English, making it one of Egypt’s most traveler-friendly museums.

What You’ll Find Inside

The museum houses a stunning collection of artifacts spanning thousands of years—from the Old Kingdom through to the Islamic era—most of which were discovered right in the Luxor region (ancient Thebes).

Highlights include:

The Statue of Thutmose III: A powerful, commanding figure perfectly preserved.

The Cachette of Luxor Temple: A collection of nearly two dozen statues buried near the temple and unearthed in 1989. These include incredible statues of Amun, Hathor, and pharaohs like Amenhotep III and Tutankhamun.

The Royal Mummies of Ahmose I and Ramesses I: Displayed in a dark, temperature-controlled chamber with reverence and fascinating detail.

Reliefs, tools, jewelry, and pottery that offer glimpses into daily life in ancient Egypt.

You’ll also find artifacts from the tomb of King Tutankhamun, including funerary items that are less famous but equally fascinating—offering insight into the young king’s short but impactful reign.

The New Extension: More to Explore

A more recent addition to the museum includes new galleries that house:

  • Military artifacts from the reigns of the warrior pharaohs.
  • Items from Akhenaten’s reign, including rare Amarna art that showcases the distinctive, more naturalistic style of the time.
  • Artifacts from Deir el-Medina, the village of the workers who built the Valley of the Kings tombs—offering insight into the lives of ordinary ancient Egyptians.
