Sailing on the Nile river
A Serene Journey Through History and Nature on Egypt’s Lifeline
In the palpitating heart of Egypt lies the Nile River, the main communication route of ancient Egyptian civilization.
The Nile played a crucial role in the fertility of the land, supporting crops and lush valleys. Because of this, cities and towns are typically found on the eastern bank of the river, while cemeteries and burial temples are situated on the western side.
Sailing down the Nile River isn’t just a bucket-list-worthy experience—it’s a peaceful immersion into the very soul of Egypt. From ancient temples to timeless sunsets, the Nile offers a window into thousands of years of history, all while you float gently between worlds.
Different Ways to Experience a Nile River
Felucca Rides
For me, the Felucca ride is a must do. Feluccas are traditional, wooden sailboats that have been used in Egypt, Sudan, and Iraq for thousands of years. They give you the opportunity to enjoy a more intimate trip and access places where a bigger boat couldn’t reach.
Feluccas are also suitable for shorter trips, and you can even rent them by the hour. You can either book them in advance or just approach the riverbank, where there are many sailors offering this service. The usual longer routes are between Luxor and Aswan.
They come in different shapes and sizes, and they are available for both single travelers (Like the one I took) or small groups. If you decide to take a longer trip, please keep in mind that Feluccas do not have cabins or enclosed areas, so you would sleep in the open air.
Cruise or Riverboats
For some people, the best way to explore the Nile River is aboard a cruise because of the comfort and amenities. There are many options available, from 5 star cruises to riverboats with less amenities. You can cruise from Luxor to Aswan or, depending on the cruise, more extensive routes all the way from Cairo to Luxor/Aswan.
They run on schedule, so it is recommended to book these in advance. Just like a regular cruise, they make stops for you to discover things on the way. They usually feature private cabins, restaurant, sundecks, pools and bar. You’ll typically spend several nights aboard, enjoying leisurely days of exploration and relaxation.
Is it safe to sail the Nile?
Yes, sailing the Nile is generally safe and one of the most peaceful ways to experience Egypt. Cruise operators prioritize the safety and comfort of their guests, and the routes between Luxor and Aswan are well-traveled and secure. Like in any destination, it’s always a good idea to book with reputable companies, follow local advice, and keep your belongings close. I personally felt safe the entire time and found the cruise to be a calm and relaxing break from the sometimes chaotic energy of the cities.
How much does a cruise cost?
Nile cruises vary widely in price depending on the level of luxury, duration, and what’s included. Budget-friendly options start around $250–$400 USD for a 3-night cruise, while mid-range to luxury cruises can go from $600 up to over $1,500 for all-inclusive packages with high-end amenities. Many also include guided tours at major historical sites like Karnak Temple, Edfu, and the Valley of the Kings. It’s worth comparing a few to find the one that suits your travel style—and budget!
Should I go northbound or southbound?
Both directions offer incredible experiences, so it really comes down to preference and logistics. Most travelers go southbound from Luxor to Aswan, as it allows you to start with the more monument-heavy part of the journey (think Luxor and Karnak Temples) and then relax as you sail toward Aswan. However, northbound from Aswan to Luxor is just as scenic, slightly less common, and can be a good option if flights or train connections line up better for your trip.
If you want to give yourself a little extra privacy and comfort, consider some Sunrise yacht products.
