Mount Sinai

Egypt's Sacred Peak

Located in the Sinai Peninsula in northeastern Egypt and locally known as Gebel Musa or Mount Horeb, Mount Sinai Mount Sinai rises 2,285 meters above sea level. It is revered by Christians, Muslims and Jews, as it is believed that God delivered his Ten Commandments to Moses here.

A fascinating fact is that, despite its religious significance, the exact location of the biblical Mount Sinai has been debated for centuries. Numerous theories exist, with some surprisingly suggesting alternative sites as far away as Mount Kilimanjaro inn Africa.

Ascent of Mount Sinai

One of the most memorable and spiritually significant activities in Egypt is the ascent of Mount Sinai—particularly the nighttime hike to catch the sunrise from the summit. The hike begins around midnight, with hikers equipped with flashlights and layered clothing to brave the cold desert air. Reaching the peak just before daylight is an incredible experience, as you can watch the first rays of the sun light up valleys.

It is a beautiful and easy climb, many pilgrims choose to make this hike at least once in their lifetime. While the sunrise hike is the most popular, there’s no fixed schedule—you can hike Mount Sinai at any time of day.

Please note that a local Bedouin guide is required for the hike. Guides are usually available at the base near St. Catherine’s Monastery, where the trail begins.

Due to the sacred nature of the area, the Egyptian National Parks Office has established several rules. If you plan to spend the night on the mountain, you must sleep below the summit at the small plateau known as Elijah’s Basin. This spot has a few composting toilets and a 500-year-old cypress tree, believed to be where the prophet Elijah heard the voice of God. Make sure to bring enough food and water, warm clothes, and a sleeping bag. It gets cold and windy, even in summer, and light snow is common in winter.

Hiking Trails:

Mount Sinai Trail: A 6.8-mile out-and-back trail that’s considered challenging and takes about 4 hours and 35 minutes to complete. The trail has an elevation gain of 2,506 ft and features camel rides, shops, and geology.

Siket El Bashait: A longer, shallower route to the summit that takes about 2.5 hours on foot, but camels can also be used.

Steps of Repentance: A steeper, more direct route to the summit that involves climbing the 3,750 “steps of repentance” in the ravine behind the monastery.

Camel Trail: You can reach the beginning of the camel trail by walking along the northern wall of St. Catherine’s Monastery, beyond the end of the compound. This route is easier and typically takes around two hours to climb at a steady pace.
