St. Mark’s Coptic Orthodox Cathedral

A sacred site with ancient roots and deep spiritual significance

Located in the heart of Alexandria, St. Mark’s Coptic Orthodox Cathedral tells a story of Christian heritage, resilience, and faith that stretches back almost 2,000 years. Whether you’re religious or just curious about Egypt’s diverse cultural layers, visiting the cathedral offers a quiet and humbling contrast to the city’s busy streets.

A Church With Ancient Origins

St. Mark’s Cathedral is believed to sit on the original site where St. Mark the Evangelist, one of the four gospel writers, first preached Christianity in Egypt around AD 42. According to tradition, he was also martyred in Alexandria, making this church the oldest Christian church in Africa.

Although the structure has been rebuilt and restored several times throughout history, its significance as the seat of the Coptic Orthodox Pope and the heart of Egypt’s Coptic Christian community remains unchanged.

What You’ll See

The current building features white façade and cross-topped domes. Inside you’ll be greeted by gorgeous stained-glass windows and elaborate wooden carvings. In the crypt beneath the church, you’ll find a shrine dedicated to St. Mark, believed to contain relics of the saint (though many were taken to Venice centuries ago).

Tips for Visiting

  • Modest dress is appreciated, as this is an active place of worship. Women should cover their shoulders and avoid short skirts.
  • The best time to visit is in the morning or before mass, when the church is quietest.
  • Be respectful of services and avoid photography during prayer times.
  • If you’re lucky, a friendly priest or staff member might offer a quick history lesson or guide you through the crypt.
