The Mosque of Amr Ibn al-As:

Egypt’s First Mosque

Nestled in Fustat, the oldest part of Cairo, the Mosque of Amr Ibn al-As marks the beginning of Islam in Egypt. Built in 641 AD, it was the first mosque ever constructed on the African continent, and over the centuries, it has become a powerful symbol of Egypt’s Islamic heritage.

Though the mosque has been rebuilt and restored multiple times, it still retains a deep sense of history. The current structure may look modern compared to Egypt’s more ornate mosques, but beneath its arches lies over a thousand years of worship, change, and resilience.

Who Was Amr Ibn al-As?

Amr Ibn al-As was a general of the Arab army who led the conquest of Egypt under the Rashidun Caliphate. After establishing control in the area, he ordered the construction of a mosque—one that would serve not just as a place of prayer, but also as a community hub, courthouse, and school. This original structure laid the foundation for Cairo’s identity as a center of Islamic learning and culture.

What You’ll Find Inside

While modest in design compared to later Islamic architecture, the mosque is serene and open, with a large courtyard, elegant colonnades, and a prayer hall that stretches wide without pillars obstructing the view. The mihrab (prayer niche) and minbar (pulpit) reflect traditional Islamic features, and the air of calmness inside makes it a perfect escape from Cairo’s chaos.

Look for:

  • The original site marked within the mosque
  • Simple yet elegant marble columns
  • Peaceful atmosphere perfect for quiet reflection
