What to expect
Language
The official language of Egypt is Standard Arabic, but english is also taught in schools. As tourism is a big part of their economy, many people there speak English, but I would recommend to learn some words in arabic to make your trip smoother. Keep in consideration that english is more common in big cities and not so much on remote areas.
Electricity
In Egypt the standard voltage is 230 V and the frequency is 50 Hz. That’s the standard voltage in the UK, Europe, Australia and most of Asia and Africa; If you are traveling from the US you will need an adaptor
Currency
Egyptian Pound is the official currency in Egypt, but US dollars and Euros are accepted as well in the majority of tourism locations. I recommend to change your currency directly here as your will get a better rate for it. 1 USD is equivalent to about 49 egyptian pounds (as of 2025). Tipping is highly encouraged while in Egypt, so having cash is highly adviced.
Climate
Egypt’s weather varies greatly depending on the season and location. The northern coast and Nile Delta region have a Mediterranean climate with mild, rainy winters and hot, dry summers, whil
Safety
Egypt is considered very safe for tourists, and the government has implemented a number of measures to ensure the safety of visitors. However, like any country, it is important to take precautions and be aware of your surroundings, particularly in crowded areas and tourist hotspots.

How to get around Egypt
By Air: Fastest Way to Cover Long Distances
If you’re short on time or want to skip the long overland journeys, domestic flights are a great option. Airlines like EgyptAir and Air Cairo connect major cities like Cairo, Luxor, Aswan, and even beach destinations like Hurghada and Sharm El Sheikh. Most flights take under two hours, and while they’re pricier than trains or buses, they save a lot of travel time.
By Train: Scenic & Affordable
Egypt’s railway network connects Cairo with Alexandria, Luxor, and Aswan. First-class express trains are clean, comfortable, and perfect for long-haul journeys. There are also overnight sleeper trains between Cairo and the south—great if you want to save on a night’s stay. Ordinary trains are cheaper but slower, often without air conditioning, and mostly used by locals.
By Car: Adventurous But Not for Everyone
Renting a car is possible, but not always recommended—especially in big cities like Cairo or Alexandria where traffic can feel intense. Road signs might not always be clear, and local driving habits take some getting used to. Still, if you’re confident behind the wheel and want flexibility, road-tripping Egypt is doable—just make sure you have an International Driving Permit and a GPS.
Taxis & Ride-Sharing: Easy & Reliable in Cities
Taxis are everywhere in Egypt, but always agree on a price beforehand—or make sure the meter is on (especially in white taxis, which are more modern). For hassle-free rides, apps like Uber and Careem are available in Cairo, Alexandria, and some parts of Giza. I used Uber almost every day—it’s affordable, reliable, and eliminates the need to haggle.
Buses & Microbuses: Budget-Friendly & Adventurous
City buses and microbuses are cheap and often chaotic. In places like Cairo, Luxor, and Alexandria, they’re packed with locals and rarely stick to schedules. It’s not the most tourist-friendly experience, but if you’re feeling adventurous (and don’t mind a little unpredictability), it can be a fun way to see daily life. For longer trips, intercity buses like Go Bus, Super Jet, and Blue Bus are more comfortable, with AC and entertainment onboard. They’re a solid mid-range option if you’re not flying.
On the Nile: The Most Magical Way to Travel
Cruising the Nile is iconic—and for good reason. You’ll float past palm-lined banks, ancient temples, and desert hills in absolute peace. There are options for every style and budget:
- Nile Cruises (3 to 5 stars): Run between Luxor and Aswan with stops at temples along the way.
- Dahabiya Cruises: Smaller, traditional wooden sailboats with a more intimate and slower-paced feel.
- Feluccas: Traditional sailboats without motors. I did a short ride in Luxor and it was unforgettable—peaceful, quiet, and deeply atmospheric.
